In addition, they are important carriers of flavor and aroma compounds and perform numerous vital functions in our body.

For a long time, however, fats did not have a particularly good reputation and were generally considered unhealthy. Today we know: Not all fats are the same. Depending on their type and composition, fats can have very different effects on our health.

Omega-3 fatty acids play a special role in this regard. They belong to the polyunsaturated fatty acids and are involved in numerous important processes in the body.

Certain omega-3 fatty acids are essential. This means: Our body cannot produce them itself, or can only produce them to a limited extent, and therefore depends on an adequate intake through the diet. You can learn more about this here.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Multi-Talents for our health

Omega-3 fatty acids perform numerous important functions in the body. In particular, numerous studies are available on the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

DHA contributes, among other things, to the maintenance of normal brain function and vision. EPA and DHA also improve normal heart function. With a correspondingly high daily intake, EPA and DHA can also contribute to maintaining normal blood pressure and normal triglyceride levels.

Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly interesting in two areas: in the regulation of inflammatory processes and for the brain and nervous system.

Omega-3 and Chronic Inflammation

Chronic, low-grade inflammatory processes are associated with numerous aging processes and diseases. Unlike acute inflammation, for example after an injury, they can persist largely unnoticed for a long time.

Such inflammatory processes play a role, among other things, in cardiovascular diseases and other chronic diseases. EPA and DHA are particularly important for the regulation of inflammation. The body can use them to form various signaling substances that are involved in controlling and resolving inflammatory processes.

Figuratively speaking, chronic inflammation can be thought of as small smoldering fires in the body. Although omega-3 fatty acids are not a “fire extinguisher” in the medical sense, they are an important part of the body’s own mechanisms for regulating inflammatory processes. You can learn more about this here.

Omega-3 for the Brain and Nervous System

Omega-3 fatty acids also play an important role in the brain and nervous system. In particular, DHA is an important component of cell membranes in the brain and the retina of the eye.

An adequate supply of DHA supports normal brain function. Various studies demonstrate the great importance of omega-3 fatty acids for mental performance and healthy brain aging. A good supply of omega-3 fatty acids also reduces the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

In addition, the influence of EPA and DHA on mood and psychological well-being is being investigated. Particularly with regard to depression, there are initial promising study results.

The 3 most important Omega-3 Fatty Acids

There are different types of omega-3 fatty acids. Three in particular are important for human health: ALA, EPA and DHA.

ALA – Alpha-Linolenic Acid

ALA is an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. Since the human body cannot produce ALA itself, it must be obtained through food. ALA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels when a sufficient amount is consumed daily.

Good plant-based sources of omega-3 include, for example, flaxseed oil and flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts and rapeseed oil. The body can convert ALA to a limited extent into EPA and subsequently into DHA. However, this conversion is relatively inefficient. Therefore, from a nutritional perspective, ALA cannot be considered fully equivalent to the direct intake of EPA and DHA.

EPA – Eicosapentaenoic Acid

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. It is found particularly in fatty marine fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring.

Together with DHA, EPA plays an important role in normal heart function and is also involved in the formation of various signaling substances that regulate inflammatory processes, among other things.

DHA – Docosahexaenoic Acid

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is also a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid and is found in larger amounts in fatty marine fish.

Particularly high concentrations of DHA are found in the brain and in the retina of the eye. DHA therefore contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision.

An important alternative to fish is microalgae or algal oils. They can provide DHA and – depending on the product – also EPA, and are therefore particularly suitable for people who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Omega-3 and Omega-6: It’s all about the ratio

Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids perform important functions in the human body. Certain representatives of both fatty acid groups are essential and must be obtained through the diet.

Omega-6 fatty acids are widespread in our diet. Good sources include various vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. However, numerous processed foods also contain larger amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. If too much of this “bad” omega-6 is consumed, it has a pro-inflammatory effect and also causes omega-3, with its anti-inflammatory properties, to be blocked.

For this reason, an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of no more than 5:1 is recommended. In the Western diet, however, it is often 15:1 or higher, which is associated with the increased prevalence of chronic diseases. For a healthy diet, it is therefore important to reduce unhealthy sources of omega-6 and instead focus more on the intake of high-quality omega-3.

Anyone who wants to improve their omega-3 intake should specifically incorporate omega-3-rich foods into their diet. The most important sources include fatty marine fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines. Plant-based foods such as flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, and walnuts primarily provide ALA. For vegetarians and vegans, omega-3 algal oils can be an interesting way to consume DHA and, in some cases, EPA directly.

Conclusion: Why Omega-3 Fatty Acids are so valuable

Omega-3 fatty acids are an important part of a balanced diet. EPA and DHA in particular play a significant role in the heart, brain, and eyes and are involved in numerous metabolic and regulatory processes.

Those who regularly eat fatty fish or use suitable plant-based or algae-based omega-3 sources can contribute to an adequate intake. High-quality omega-3 dietary supplements of animal or plant origin can also be a good alternative.

Why are Omega-3 Fatty Acids so important for our health?
